Bringing Back the Beaver

£20.00 £16.00

Farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gow’s inspirational and often riotously funny account of how the movement to reintroduce beavers to Britain became the most dramatic and subversive conservation act of the modern era. In addition to detailing the ups and downs of rewilding beavers, Gow makes a passionate case for the beaver’s critical role in providing a sustainable fix for flooding and future drought, and creating an environment that enables the broadest possible spectrum of Britain’s wildlife to thrive.

Claxton Diary

£9.99

For seventeen years, as part of his daily routine, the author and naturalist Mark Cocker has taken a two-mile walk down to the river from his cottage on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. The subjects of these short essays range from the yellow-barred longhorn micromoth to the ‘Beast from the East’, unwedded queen ants pouring out of pavement cracks to owls ghosting down the dykes at last light. A vision of an English country parish that for intimacy and precise detail is comparable with Gilbert White’s diary on Selbourne.

Diary of a Young Naturalist

£16.00

At the age of five, Dara McAnulty was diagnosed with Asperger’s/autism. By seven, he was aware of his isolation and when the bullying started, nature became more than an escape: it was a life-support system. This evocative, raw and beautifully written chronicle of 15-year-old Dara’s home patch in Northern Ireland features diary entries from one spring to the next about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world, juggling homework, exams and friendships alongside his life as a conservationist and environmental activist. With a sense of awe and wonder, he describes in meticulous detail encounters with nature in his garden and the wild.

Fair Trade Bird Nester

£15.00 £12.50

Purchasing this Fair Trade product helps both wildlife and people. In addition to giving a bird a nest you’ll be supporting the Artisan workers in Southern Bangladesh who make them. Funding the survival of many women and their families from rural communities in desperate poverty.

Handmade to the highest quality finish using natural sea grass and recycled saris. Every nester is unique in colour! Each individual artisan chooses the colourful recycled sari pattern making every nester different.

The Fair Trade Bird Nester has a sturdy inner frame for support. Attached hooks at the rear and a long loop at the top ensure you can fasten the nester securely. As a result these make it easier to site the nester in the natural leaf cover and vegetation of ivy, bushes, trees or hedges. The nester has a small round entrance reinforced with steel. It is also slightly protruding to make it easy for birds to land and perch on.

Position the bird nester in a sheltered space to keep out harsh weather. Preferably face the bird nester between North and South-East. A warm protected roosting space out of the prevailing wind can be a life saver for small birds during cold harsh weather condition.
